The Big Bear Valley Historical Society was founded in November of 1967 by a small group of people who wished to preserve the colorful past of this high mountain valley.A non-profit corporation was formed, and by-laws were adopted by this education society with the following objectives: - To increase the appreciation of Big Bear Valley history, preserve historical artifacts and landmarks, and to promote research in the area. - To obtain, maintain, and operate a museum in which to display historical artifacts pertaining to Big Bear Valley and the west for the benefit of all persons, interested on a not-for-profit basis. - To support and sponsor activities in Big Bear Valley which help preserve Big Bear history and traditions On August 4, 1971, the Big Bear Valley Historical Society was incorporated as a California non-profit organization under IRS Code Section 501(c)(3). The Society maintains and operates the The Big Bear Valley Historical (Eleanor Abbott) Museum located at the northeast end of Big Bear City Park off Greenway Drive. The museum is open from the end of May into October. Special tours for groups are available by appointment. Click here for more information about the museum, including hours and directions. Society activities are open to BBVHS members, and consist of regular monthly meetings, many interesting field trips, and the operation of the museum. A monthly newsletter, "TALL PINES", is mailed to members providing current Society news and listing planned events. The Society publishes books pertaining to Big Bear Valley which are available at the museum gift shop and local book stores, or may be ordered by mail from the Society. |
